The releases, one by one

Non-farm payrolls

USD · US Bureau of Labor Statistics
high
When
Monthly, usually the first Friday
Issuer time
08:30 New York
Your time
—
Usually moves
USD pairs, gold, US indices

The monthly change in US employment outside farming. The headline figure is the most-watched single data point of the month; the reaction is to the gap against consensus, not to the number itself.

Consumer Price Index

USD · US Bureau of Labor Statistics
high
When
Monthly, around the 10th to 14th
Issuer time
08:30 New York
Your time
—
Usually moves
USD pairs, gold, US indices

US consumer inflation. It sets expectations for the next rate decision, which is why a surprise in either direction moves rate-sensitive instruments before the Federal Reserve has said anything.

FOMC rate decision

USD · US Federal Reserve
high
When
Eight scheduled meetings a year
Issuer time
14:00 New York
Your time
—
Usually moves
USD pairs, gold, US indices, everything rate-sensitive

The Federal Reserve's policy rate decision and statement, with a press conference half an hour later. The decision is often priced in; the statement wording and the projections are where the move usually comes from.

ECB rate decision

EUR · European Central Bank
high
When
Eight monetary policy meetings a year
Issuer time
14:15 Frankfurt
Your time
—
Usually moves
EUR pairs, European indices

The European Central Bank's policy rate decision, followed by a press conference at 14:45. Euro pairs react to the decision first and to the guidance in the press conference second.

Bank of England rate decision

GBP · Bank of England
high
When
Eight Monetary Policy Committee announcements a year, on Thursdays
Issuer time
12:00 London
Your time
—
Usually moves
GBP pairs, FTSE

The Monetary Policy Committee's Bank Rate decision, published with the vote split. A divided vote can move sterling as much as the decision itself.

Issuer's release schedule →

Bank of Japan policy decision

JPY · Bank of Japan
high
When
Eight monetary policy meetings a year
Issuer time
No fixed time — published when the meeting ends, typically around midday Tokyo
Usually moves
JPY pairs, Nikkei

The Bank of Japan's policy decision. Unlike the other central banks it has no fixed release time, which is itself a source of volatility in yen pairs across the Tokyo session on decision days.

ISM Manufacturing PMI

USD · Institute for Supply Management
medium
When
Monthly, first business day
Issuer time
10:00 New York
Your time
—
Usually moves
USD pairs, US indices

A survey of purchasing managers, read as an early signal of the month's activity. The 50 line separates expansion from contraction, and a cross of it draws more attention than the size of the move.

Issuer's release schedule →

Eurozone inflation flash estimate

EUR · Eurostat
medium
When
Monthly, at the end of the month or first days of the next
Issuer time
11:00 Brussels
Your time
—
Usually moves
EUR pairs

The first estimate of euro-area consumer inflation, ahead of the full release. It is the inflation reading the ECB's next decision is read against.

Issuer's release schedule →

UK Consumer Price Index

GBP · Office for National Statistics
medium
When
Monthly, around the middle of the month
Issuer time
07:00 London
Your time
—
Usually moves
GBP pairs

UK consumer inflation, released before the London open. It lands into a thin book, which makes the first minutes of the reaction larger than the number alone would justify.

Issuer's release schedule →

US GDP (advance estimate)

USD · US Bureau of Economic Analysis
medium
When
Quarterly, at the end of the month following the quarter
Issuer time
08:30 New York
Your time
—
Usually moves
USD pairs, US indices

The first estimate of quarterly US output. It is revised twice afterwards, so the advance print is the one that moves price and the later ones rarely do.
